A chemical reaction occurs when new bonds form or old bonds break in compounds; signs of a chemical reaction include changes in color, odor, or temperature or the formation of a precipitate or gas. These chemical reactions can look absolutely crazy, and others are every day occurrences.
Chemical reactions are not complicated in first general concept, but there are many things to know about them.

A crazy chemical reaction, is what happens when most of the extremely reactive Alkali Metals react with water. These are very small chinks of the metals, so if you have seen much bigger reactions with one of the elements listed, it was most likely a much larger chunk. The reactions get much bigger with larger amounts. To learn more about the chemical equation they show here and how to decipher it see the "The Great and Powerful Chemical Equation" tab.
Chemical reactions don't always involve explosions, though, here is an example of a do-it-yourself, explosion free chemical. This is a good informational video for chemical reactions too. Try putting a crushed Alka Seltzer tablet in a balloon and put the balloon over the mouth of a beaker filled with water. Then shake the Alka-Seltzer into the water, the balloon will inflate with the invisible by-product of the reaction: CO2 (yes, that 2 is supposed to be sub scripted).
